FREESCO FAQ - Open questions

Frequent Asked Questions for the FREESCO single floppy router

I am trying to setup a link between a ... (Gareth Gibbins)

I am trying to setup a link between a mates lan and mine, we both currently have adsl connections (that we want to keep) and thus both have gateways, I am trying to use freesco boxes that will be the routers allowing a wireless connection on one nic (the bridge between us) a wired connection to the local lan at each end and our current adsl routers (modems really) on a third, I have posted a very basic picture at http://www.heywoodsc.vic.edu.au/Giraffe's/ we currently have picture1, I am trying to achieve picture2 or if thats not possible maybe I need to do picture3. I am sorry to waste your time on just me, but I have tried for a week using smoothwall (no success at all) and freesco, I like the "dos"y look of freesco (part of being an old fart I think:)).

I can get from the bridge nic into the local lan and I can get from the bridge or local lan out to the internet, but I cannot get from the local lan into the bridge.

For example, if I replace freesco2 with a pc (using only 1 nic, ie no other networking there) it gets an ip from freesco1 and can get into local lan 1, BUT local lan 1 cannot get back into it (by \\192.168.131.x where x is the ip of the windows box replacing freesco2).

I have told freesco that network1 (local lan1) and network2 (wireless bridge) are trusted.
All nics are intel, and seem o.k. as I can get from either lan out to the internet, and I can get from either end of the bridge to the internet too, the wireless bridge does work, although at the moment I am just using a cable between the freesco's to prove it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am sure your product can do this for me and have no doubt I am missing something simple, I just cannot work out what it is.
Thanks,
G.

I installed Freesco 3.8 using the Setting up FREESCO ... (Jim)

I installed Freesco 3.8 using the Setting up FREESCO for dummies. It went very well but the installation is for putting the product on a hard drive. That wasn't a problem either. I found a reference to 'backup'.
When I use the command 'backup' I get the warning about copying standard system configuration files . Hit yes, see copying files. Then in Green !! The disk is unmounted !! "Warning: Some errors occured during backup. Please check your disk".
Can someone please explain in layman's terms how to create a backup on a floppy disk.
For now I just installed the product again using the floppy and confirmed it boots up with the correct configuration. But I can't access the Http: server when I use the floppy. I love this product but find answers to simple things like this is a time killer. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi,

I have installed openfiler on my relative old computer and use this as a NAS/SAN appliance. Now I want to use the same computer to act as a router of my 2 segment lan (fast- and giga network). Can I use FREESCO for this purpose ? It looks like FREESCO will install a complete Linux OS on the computer. I want to preserve my openfiler installtion and just want to add FREESCO to be used as router.

Thanks in advance for the information.
Best Regards,

Cannot find links identified in;-
FTP

How can I use an FTP server behind my FREESCO firewall?

The FTP protocol doesn\'t work very well through a NAT/firewall box, because a \'random\' port is selected for communication between client and server.

A possible solution for this problem is to install the proxy-suite package.
See Dingetje\'s packages page.

This white paper describes the proxy-suite in detail.

A sample config for FREESCO 027 shows howto expose an FTP server running inside the firewall at IP 192.168.0.21.

I was wondering If I could get some Help ... (Chris)

I was wondering If I could get some Help on how I could best use FREESCO with what I have.

It will be my First Time using any kind of linux based stuff.

I currently have 3 Pc's networked all on XP, but unfortunately they are hooked in to a NB1300 plus 4 Router. This router only allows 20 ports to be forwarded and you cant forward the same port to more than one lan ip, this and a variety of other problems with this router is one of the things that drew me to FREESCO, that and I want to web serve at some point and would like to be able to access files externaly or create FTP accounts for friends.

I really cant afford any more hardware and thought this might be an option, I have had a long look through the forums but am not sure if I can proced with what equipment I have.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Merry Christmas, & A Happy New Year To you all

How do I configure restrict.cfg?
Sub-questions:
What is default behavior - allow all?
What takes priority? (ie. do I ban first or allow first?)
If I ban the subnet and then allow specific machines, do I need to include the router's IP (eg. eth1)
Mask 255.255.255.0 is the same as /24? Both for bl AND be?
(How) Can I ban a client access to specific IP's? (eg. stop 192.168.0.16 from accessing 111.222.111.222?)
